President, Mark Keppel High School FIDM Fashion Club
Karen Ayala started an official FIDM Fashion Club at Mark Keppel High School in Alhambra, California, in her senior year. She said her school didn't have any fashion related classes, so she thought it would be great to start a club. Her only regret is that she didn't start it earlier in her high school career!
Tell us a little about yourself: My name is Karen Ayala. I'm a happy person; you'll always see me with a smile on my face. Ever since I can remember, fashion has been something I've wanted to pursue. I never let anything stop me from trying to pursue my dream. I know I still have a long way to go, but my approach will always be with the same attitude. My dream goal is to become a stylist for a magazine.
How did you get involved in Fashion Club at your high school? I wanted to do something different my senior year, and I noticed my school didn't offer fashion related classes or have a fashion club so I thought it would be fun to start a FIDM Fashion Club at my school. Once the club was formed I was thrilled to see how many students signed up! FIDM Fashion Club has been a big success!
What kinds of activities do you do at your Fashion Club meetings? Since it was the inaugural year of FIDM Fashion Club, we focused most of our meetings on planning fundraisers such as bake sales and boba sales; we also participated at our school's food festival. Aside from fundraising, we helped decorate our school's football field for the homecoming pep rally; it was really fun! One activity we enjoy during our meetings is a game called "Name That Logo."
What's a fashion trend you're loving right now? I love the color blocking trend. I feel that a person can express himself or herself with colors! I absolutely love it!
What fashion websites/blogs do you love? I don't really read blogs, which is strange because I hear a lot of fashion trends and fashion updates are on them. I mostly stick to magazines. I enjoy reading Seventeen Magazine and Teen Vogue.
Do you have plans to attend FIDM? Yes, I plan on majoring in Visual Communications.
What are your career goals? I want to be a wardrobe stylist for a magazine. My dream would be Seventeen Magazine!
Anything else you'd like to share? I really enjoyed being the President of FIDM Fashion Club for Mark Keppel High School. I wish I had thought of starting it earlier in my high school years. If I could do it all over again, I would do it in a heartbeat!
