Jane Austen Season
on the BBC
The British Broadcasting Company (BBC) has announced that a full season of Jane Austen adaptations are in the works for broadcast next fall, and lovers of costume dramas (like us!) couldn’t be more thrilled. Mansfield Park, Northanger Abbey, and Persuasion have been added to the previously announced production of Sense and Sensibility, and the network promises “the absolute cream of British acting talent.” The channel will also show a repeat broadcast of its 1997 romantic comedy Emma by Austen, which stars Kate Beckinsale and Samantha Morton. BBC productions usually turn up a season later in the U.S. on PBS.

Becoming Jane
Ushering in Jane Austen season is Becoming Jane, a biographical film that tells the story of the 18th century writer and the real-life romance that may have inspired her clever novels. The film stars Anne Hathaway as the spunky heroine and James McAvoy as her suitor. Costumes are by Eimer Ni Mhaoldomhnaigh, who recently completed the World War II adaptation of Brideshead Revisited to be released next year. View the trailer.
