Fashion Club's Movie Reviews with an Eye for Film Fashion & Costume Design

Starring teen queens Amber Tamblyn (“Joan of Arcadia”) and Alexis Bledel (“The Gilmore Girls”), along with America Ferrera and Blake Lively, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants tells the story of one special summer in the lives of four longtime friends. This is the screen adaptation of Ann Brashares’ best-selling novel by the same name. Opens June 1, 2005.

On a shopping trip the day before going their separate ways, the pals find a pair of thrift store jeans that fits each one of them perfectly, even though they are all different shapes and sizes. The foursome decides to use the pants to keep in touch, each one wearing them for a week before mailing them on to the next.

Each character’s wardrobe illustrates their personality and style. Bledel’s character Lena wears soft and feminine colors, full skirts and flats, unlike Tamblyn’s wild rocker-goth chic Tibby, who sports multi-hued hair and kilt-like skirts with black boots. Ferrara’s character Carmen wears curve hugging pink pants, striped v-neck tops and embroidered shirts, while Lively’s star athlete Bridget sticks to hoodies, sporty tanks and cropped khakis.

Trivia: Who doesn’t love a great pair of perfect-fitting jeans? While denim has been around for centuries in various forms, it wasn’t until the 1930s that cowboy movies brought jeans to the national forefront.
