80s Flashback

1980s-Inspired Hair and
Makeup Tips

Not every beauty trend from the ’80s was a good idea (hello, teased bangs hardened by gallons of aerosol hairspray), but there were some very clever hair and makeup tricks that are worth repeating! Here’s how:

Got the Blues
Done right, blue hues can look sensational on any skin tone! This season, we’re thinking the bolder the better, so ditch that neutral eye shadow and replace it with a fantastically brilliant blue. Sweep the color onto your eyelids, lightly blending up to the crease. Then use the tip of the brush to line your lower lashes with the same color. We love Shiseido The Makeup Hydro-Power Eye Shadow in Proenza Schouler Blue ($23) because of the name, natch, but also because of the intense color.
Hot Stuff
Hot pink was the go-to color of the decade and we’re pretty sure we know why—the color makes an excellent lipstick or gloss shade! If you’ve got fair skin, try a shade that is similar to classic bubble gum, like theBalm® Read My Lips Lipstick in Gossip ($16); for dark skin, go with something with notes of purple, like L’Oreal Colour Riche in Wild Plum ($6.99).
Pump Up the Volume
In the ’80s, the bigger the hair the better! We still love the look of a full, voluminous mane, but without the over-teased perm and tacky hairspray. Instead, try spraying your roots with a volumizing spray, such as Garnier Fructis Style Body & Volume Root Lifting Treatment Spray ($6), then blow dry with a large round brush, lifting hair upwards.
Oh Baby, Baby!
Once upon a time (about 20 years ago) there was an insanely popular fragrance that smelled exactly like baby powder and everyone, I mean everyone, was wild about it. Today’s take on sweet, girlish fragrances takes on a fruitier spin with less of a powdery presence. Try Yves Saint Laurent Baby Doll Eau de Toilette Spray ($39) for a whimsical change of pace.
