 to blogs, books, and museum exhibits! For this year’s Back-to-School Contest, we asked
Fashion Club members to show (and tell) us what inspires them the most. The prize
packs included shopping sprees, digital cameras, industry magazine subscriptions, and

Alyssa S.'s Winning Essay:
My inspiration is music. Music allows me to escape from all the chaos and be able to
focus. While listening to music, I can relax and let my mind wonder. The genres I
enjoy the most are alternative and independent, like bands such as The Smiths,
Modest Mouse, and Husky Rescue. It is so much more than listening to someone rap
or outlandish techno sounds. It is real music.
I am inspired by music because of how it makes me feel. The sounds of the instru-
ments and the voices of the singers give me different emotions. I can then express
how I feel through fashion. Music affects my color choices, pattern choices, and
music affects it all.
Music and fashion is the greatest combination to me. I can listen to music while
sewing or designing and watch how it affects what I am doing. Music helps me
express who I am and the impact I can bring to the fashion world.
