Lindsay's Entry:

My Room
"A Place for Friends"

Being a 15- (almost 16-) year-old girl in high school, I have always dreamed of having the coolest room and people would say, "Wow Lindsay, I wish I had a room like yours!" Of course that is every teenage girl's dream. But by winning this contest, it will prove to me that I have what it takes to meet this challenge. My lifestyle is very goal oriented and I have many thoughts for my future that I want to accomplish and succeed in. One of my ultimate goals that I have been trying to achieve ever since I moved into my house was to redo my room in a unique way, but still have that young feminine touch to it. Howevith Autism Spectrum Disorder, funds have been limited in my family. With Jeremy's (my little brother) unlimited supply of doctor bills, treatment fees, and therapy sessions, any extra income goes to pay his medical bills, along with my mom's, my dad's, and my own doctor bills. My desire for a new look to my room has always been a dream, so when I heard about this opportunity, I immediately started researching and working to produce what I knew waer, due to my younger brother coming around when I was about 13 and his recent diagnosis ws the best I could do. Along with fulfilling a dream and proving what I know I can do, by winning this contest, it will give me a place to escape the constant rush of life with a disabled family member. If I were to win this contest, it would feel like a great burden is being lifted from my shoulders so I could escape into the world of relaxation.

All forms of design are of equal importance. Without graphic design, we wouldn't be able to enjoy movies such as Finding Nemo, Shrek, or Ice Age. Also, without fashion design, there would be no uniqueness in style or trends, and everyone would be running around in a burlap sack. Likewise, without interior design, there would be no creativity within the home, and there would be no expression of character. Every block of design relies upon one another, and when brought together, they form the masterpiece picture of life. While my main focus right now is on fashion design, I also like interior design as a hobby. I think, by getting to know how the world of interior design operates, it will also help me in my pursuit of a fashion career in dealing with colors, and which colors would look good together. To rank my top five dream jobs, number one would be fashion design, but definitely, number two would be to become an interior decorator.

I believe that art is a core part of my life, and society in general. If there was no art in the world for a day, there would be no music, movies, television, books, newspapers, colors, fashion, or character. As a result I have made a commitment for my high school years, along with my core classes and a season of varsity golf during the fall; I am going to take at least one art class a year. Freshman year I took "principals of dance" because dance (to me) is so beautiful and expressive. Sophomore year, I took "drawing and painting" to get more practice, and to work on my technique to make my work be better in the end. For my junior year, I am going to be taking photography. My philosophy is that if I have access to many different mediums of art at my school then I should take advantage of it to broaden what I know. I don't know what I am going to do for my senior year, but it will be just as diverse as all the other years.

For any special considerations to take note of, my house was built in the '60s so some of the things about my room are very out-dated. For instance, on my ceiling is that "cottage cheese" texture that I am not particularly fond of. Another example is that one of my walls has a funky texture to it that is completely different from all the other walls. The tile in my closet is starting to fall apart and crumble, making a horrible dust mess. And finally, there is a hole in my door, but I accidentally put it there. I was dancing in front of my room, and I did a kick turn, but I hit my door, thus I have a hole. Besides the fact that my room has some really old-school features, the good part is that there are no restrictions to what you want to do with my room. So if you want to go crazy with your creative instincts, there is no problem with it and you can have a blast doing whatever you want. I hope I haven't drawn on too long with my paper, but I hope you will take some of my ideas into consideration. Happy room picking!!!
