Fashion Club joined 23 FIDM Students for the Italian
portion of their Spring European Study Tour, which
also included Paris and London.
Global travel is just
one of the many glamorous
and exciting perks for a
number of our FIDM Alumni
with careers in the Fashion and
Design industries. But FIDM Students
don't have to wait until after graduation to
start seeing the world. Our yearly Study Tours
take them to places like New York City, Rome,
Paris, London, and Milan.
Accompanied by FIDM Instructors and Administrators,
students meet with top industry professionals, go
behind the scenes to tour important companies,
and immerse themselves in incredibly inspiring
architecture, fashion, and art for a uniquely
unforgettable experience!
FLORENCE, ITALY
There’s no place quite like Firenze
(the Italian word for Florence translates
as “flower”). The birthplace of the
Renaissance in the 14th century, this
Tuscan city changed art and culture in
the western world forever. From the
wonder that is Brunelleschi’s Dome to
the Ponte Vecchio that spans the river
Arno, Florence is a study in all things
beautiful and a must-see for any
aspiring designer.
It’s Crafty
While in Florence we visited
the studios of artisans, people
who have devoted years of their
life to mastering a particular craft.
From bookbinders to etchers to
mask-makers and jewelry
designers
, we toured the
workshops of these incredible
artists and learned a little bit
about their creative process.
A Mighty Art
A walking tour of the city led
by a local art historian gave us a
unique perspective on Florence
and its architecture, art, and
political history. We even
stumbled upon a parade
featuring citizens in decadent
early-Florentine costumes and
got a close-up look at
Michelangelo’s famous David--
only one of the most famous
sculptures on the planet!
ROME, ITALY
Rome was founded in 753 BC and it
shows—the Greek and Roman ruins
in the cosmopolitan city’s historical
center have astounded visitors for
literally thousands of years! From the
mind-boggling Colosseum where
gladiators and wild animals fought
for the entertainment of the elite to the
exquisitely lovely Trevi Fountain, the
vestiges of antiquity are to be found
around practically every corner.
Italian Style
Walking the bustling streets,
it’s easy to see that Rome’s
citizens have been shopping
in style for centuries. In the past,
merchants imported spices and
other exotic luxury items from
all over the known world. Now,
world-famous Italian designers
create everything from chic
accessories, shoes, and
clothing to incredibly
sophisticated home
interiors.

What did FIDM Students
purchase? Everything from
extra-large framed sunglasses
to designer handbags and leather
gladiator sandals
(a top trend for
summer)
from Louis Vuittion and
bed linen from Zara Home—luckily
there was a FedEx across the
street from the hotel!
Going to the Sistine Chapel
Awestruck FIDM Students were beyond
impressed with a private tour of the world-
renowned Sistine Chapel in Vatican City.
Michelangelo famously decorated the
chapel’s ceiling while the star painters
of the 15th century, including Botticelli,
were responsible for the interior’s
glorious frescoes depicting historical
religious scenes.
Beautiful Minds
In addition to the general Study
Tours, there are intensive, specialized
Study Tours created specifically for
individual majors such as Footwear,
Fashion Design, and Beauty Industry
Merchandise & Marketing. It’s an amazing
networking opportunity. On last year’s
Beauty Industry trip to New York, many
of the students received job offers from
some of the industry’s top beauty
companies.
Roman Holiday
For a cinematic taste of Rome, rent this
classic starring the adorably stylish
Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck.

La Dolce Vita
Frederico Fellini’s film featured screen
siren Anita Ekberg making a splash in
the Trevi Fountain.
A Room with a View
Helena Bonham Carter stars in this
must-see romantic adaptation of the
novel by E.M. Forster.

Under the Tuscan Sun

This adaptation of Frances Mayes’
novel features Diane Lane and was
partially filmed in Florence and other
parts of Tuscany.
