Chriselle Lim

Chriselle Lim

Merchandise Marketing Grad, 2009

If you have dreams of becoming a stylist or simply want to be inspired, you have got to read this interview with FIDM Grad Chriselle Lim! In the two years since she graduated, she has created a YouTube following of nearly two million views for her fashion styling videos! Her blog, The Chriselle Factor, averages 40,000 views a day. And she most recently has earned the title of Fashion & Style Director at GENLUX Magazine. She originally wanted to be a buyer when she started at FIDM. But through internships in fashion public relations for Versace and Karla Otto (while still a student at FIDM), she developed an interest in styling. She met celeb stylist Tanya Gill, who offered her an internship, and within one year, Chriselle was styling full-time on her own. The rest is history!

What do you love about what you do? What I love most about my job is that I’m able to help women feel beautiful and confident. It's amazing what the right outfit can do for a woman—she can conquer the world!

Tell us about your involvement with Coach. I’ve worked with Coach on several different occasions, but the biggest project I worked on with them was for Fashion's Night Out this year. Coach recently brought one of their original classic bags from the '70s back. They hired me, as well as fellow bloggers The Man Repeller, The Glamourai, Hanneli, and Into The Gloss, to style the classic Coach purse on Fashion's Night Out! We also got a chance to meet our viewers and readers on the night of the event at the Coach flagship store!

Fellow YouTube star Michelle Phan is a friend of yours. What have you learned from her? I have learned so much from Michelle! She has taught me that fashion and makeup should empower women, and that our videos/tutorials should be informative, as well as inspirational.

What is your proudest accomplishment? Every day is an accomplishment for me. Each night I write out a list of things I would like to accomplish the following day, whether it’s to finish filming a new tutorial or style a new campaign for a client. Big accomplishments come from the little day-by-day accomplishments.

What inspires you? The Parisian lifestyle has always played a huge role and has been an inspiration in my personal style. I’m also a huge fan of fashion from the ‘40s and ‘50s—everything was so womanly and elegant back then. I also get inspired by watercolor paintings and flowers.

How did you know FIDM was the right college for you? I knew that FIDM was the right college for me because of all the like-minded and motivated people I would be surrounded by! FIDM also has a reputation in LA for being the best fashion school. Any girl who wants to get into fashion has heard about FIDM.

How do you feel FIDM prepared you for what you’re doing now? FIDM has helped me to put myself out there. What I love about FIDM is that they encourage their students to go out in the work field and get hands-on experience. If it wasn’t for FIDM, I wouldn’t have gotten my first internship, which subsequently led me to other internships and opportunities!

Any advice for current FIDM Students? Intern. Intern. Intern! Through internships you can figure out what you are good at and what you love to do!

What is your biggest dream right now? My biggest goal right now is to continue to brand myself online and grow my audience exponentially, and eventually when the time is right, to have my own line!
